The fate of the infamous Cragg Vale Coiners, gruesome and brutal as it was, is generally considered to have been their just desserts for crimes deemed beyond the pale even in an age when punishments were often harsh.

There was one, however, who could be said to have received a very raw deal - and for his friends and relatives there was not even the consolation that the wrongdoers were ever brought to justice.

The Cross Inn, Heptonstall, was the scene of a crime of such depravity that to this day it still brings a chill of horror.
