Dated 1900

A diary dated 1900, describing the experiences in the Boer War of William Nowell, was handed over to members at the 90th anniversary celebrations.

The diary had been discovered in a secondhand bookshop in Hastings and was given to Sir Bernard Ingham, who opened the society's commemorative exhibition.

Sir Bernard paid tribute to the "formidable part" the society had played in his own education as a boy. His maternal grandfather Greenwood "Greeny" Horsfall, a founder member of the astronomical section, would have been "enormously proud it was still going full blast," he said.
